Statement
Why We Give Away Art
By giving away art, we are bypassing the gallery art consumer and going directly to the ordinary Joe on the street.
And we are subverting many of the assumptions about contemporary art-making, including its forbidding seriousness, its exclusivity and its permanence.
Materials
Now we work mostly in paper, using computer-generated images, but in the past we have worked with concrete, clothesline, metal, wood and fabric.
Our Product
We are not concerned with products to be cherished for eternity. Memory is our chief product, humor our by-product.
We give away small art objects on the street, bringing art out of the galleries into public spaces and putting it into the hands of ordinary people.
We also tell funny stories about the art giveaways, and the stories are more than documentation; they are part of the art. We have used reports, installations, our Web page and video to tell the stories.
Miscellany
We are both founding members of Philadelphia Sculptors. Roberta writes art reviews for several publications, including the Philadelphia Weekly, Artnet.com and Art on Paper magazine. Libby is the former editor of the University of Pennsylvania's faculty/staff newspaper, the Penn Current.
